An Update on Neurotrophins
نویسنده
چکیده
Neurotrophins are important proteins that regulate survival, development and function of neurons. They are produced by a variety of cells and exert their effects upon binding to specific tyrosine kinase receptors. The first neurotrophin to be identified was Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). From the pioneer studies performed by Rita-Levi Montalcini, awarded with the Nobel Prize, other neurotrophins have been identified and this family of neurotrophic factors now includes Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), Neurotrophin 3 and Neurotrophin 4. Their function as pro-survival proteins has been consolidated but subsequent studies have demonstrated that neurotrophins may also play a role in some pathological conditions. This is the focus of this special issue of Current Neuropharmacology.

Developmental thyroid hormone insufficiency and brain development: a role for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)?
Thyroid hormones (TH) are essential for normal brain development. Even modest degrees of TH disruption experienced in utero can result in neuropsychological deficits in children despite normal thyroid status at birth. Neurotrophins have been implicated in a host of brain cellular functions, and in particular, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has a well documented role in development and...

Background. BDNF and NT-4/5 have been proposed to be involved in the coordinated adaptations of the neuromuscular system to the elevated level of activity, but an activity-dependent expression of neurotrophins in skeletal muscle is not well established. Objectives. We, therefore, investigated the effect of one session of resistance exercise on mRNA expression of some neurotrophins in Slow and ...
متن کاملAn Update on Ovarian Aging and Ovarian Reserve Tests
Ovaries are the female organs that age more quickly than other tissues such as the uterus, the pituitary gland or pancreas. Different from males, an interesting question is why and how the females lose fertility so rapidly. During the aging process, both the number and quality of the oocytes in the ovaries decrease and reach to a point beyond that no more viable offspring may be produced and th...

Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells or mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are mainly isolated from bone marrow or fat tissue. Because of their potential of multilineage differentiation towards bone, cartilage and fat tissue, they were initially evaluated to develop innovative strategies for tissue engineering applications. More recently, they have gained interest based on their immunomodulatory pr...
